Il verbo essere in inglese può essere usato per:

-Descrivere cose, luoghi, persone

This is a beautiful city (questa è una bella città)

-Per dire la provenienza

He's from Poland (viene dalla Polonia)

-Per identificare le persone o gli oggetti

She's Katherine.

La forma contratta : si pù contrarre is in -s anche dopo le espressioni interrogative, (come where, who, when, what etc..) i nomi propri ed i nomi comuni.

Ma non si può contrarre il plurale are (dopo le espressioni interrogative, i nomi propri ed i domi comuni).

La forma contratta del pronome personale (per esempio I'm e We're) è la forma più usata nella lingua parlata e nella lingua scritta informale.

In inglese la risposta breve ad una domanda è formata da :

yes o no + pronome soggetto e forma più adeguata di be

Are you english? yes I am oppure no I am not
Is she from Japan? yes she is, no she isn't

La risposta breve affermativa non è mai contratta.

Per fare le domande in inglese bisogna rispettare l'ordine fisso delle parole.

Espressione interrogativa + verbo be + soggetto + complemento

es: Where is my jacket? (dove è la mia giacca)
