Grammatica Inglese : Il verbo have got

Il verbo have got in inglese si usa per esprimere possesso in generale .

Mr and Mrs Winters have got three boys. (Il signore e la signora Winters hanno tre ragazzi)

Nella lingua parlata e nella lingua scritta informale sono molto usate le forme contratte con i pronomi personali I’ve got e We’ve got.

Dopo le espressioni interrogative (who, where, when, etc..), i nomi propri e i nomi comuni  si può contrarre has got in ‘s got.

What ‘s he got ? (Che cos’ha?)

John’s got… (John ha…)

The hotel’s got …(L’ hotel ha …)

Non è possibile però contrarre il plurale have got.

Si dice : The students have got a test. ( Gli studenti hanno avuto un esame/test)  

E non : The students ’ve got a test.

Nelle risposte brevi got non si ripete e la risposta breve affermativa non viene mai contratta.

Il verbo have got è usato inoltre per parlare di parentela, per descrivere le persone e per parlare di difetti fisici.

Susan have got two sisters and a brother. (Susan ha due sorelle e un fratello)

Steve has got dark hair and brown eyes. (Steve ha capelli scuri e occhi marroni)

I’ve got toothache. (Ho mal di denti)
